This 2020 sculpture, Seal Vision: Shared Spirit, is a collaborative work created by Terresa White, Yup’ik and American, born 1968; MarkTepton, Inupiat and American, born 1967; and Don Johnston, Aleut and American, born 1962. It is made from bronze, fossil walrus ivory and walrus ivory, and baleen.
Seal Vision recognizes the “interrelated lives of seals with the people and animals of the far north.” Terresa White created the transforming central face. You can see a seal on the left side. Mark Tepton carved the walrus, seals, polar bears, dancers, fish and carving knives (ulus) from ivory. Don Johnston created the hunter sitting in a baleen basketry canoe at the top.
Beverly Terry gifted this piece to the Portland Art Museum in Oregon in 2020.
