Cedar waxwing birds are one of my favorite kinds of birds. This month, I’m showing a simple pen and ink drawing I did of one.

When you first see a cedar waxwing, you might think of it as “simple” looking. They don’t have bold markings. Instead, their markings blend together smoothly.

Their tail feathers are tipped with a yellow wax-like substance and their wingtips are tipped with red.

They wear a black mask and have a little crest on top of their head.

At certain times of the year, they gather together around the water feature in my backyard. They are one of the only kinds of birds not scared off by the larger and more aggressive American robins.

I can always tell when they’re nearby. The air is filled with their high-pitched calls and a smile of anticipation lights up my face.
