Beautiful. I grew up in South Dakota surrounded by reservations but never once did we go to see any ceremonial dances. I had never even been to Wounded Knee, although we lived very close to it. Finally asked my folks to go there when I was in H.S. but there was just a tiny sign and no further explanation. It wasn’t until I taught Lore of the West years later that I knew the full story, although my grandma had photos of it. Amazing how we can overlook what is in our back yard.
If you ever get back that way, consider going to the Crazy Horse Memorial. I read “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” many years ago and was shocked at what it recounted. Very sad part of our nation’s history.
